Unraid August Digest

All things Unraid for August 2026

Unraid Digest #82

Hey Unraiders,

August was a landmark month: Unraid 8 was officially announced, 7.4 hit its first beta, CEO Tiffany Jones looked back on two years of Unraid growth, while Unraid’s Founder Tom and Product Director Eli spoke about Unraid 8 and what’s to come.

What’s New?

Unraid’s CEO on Independence, Community & the Road Ahead

CEO Tiffany Jones looks back on years of Unraid growth: the team has more than tripled, the user base has grown five times over since 2019, and highlights what’s ahead.

A New Distro, Docker Compose, Integrated Backups, and much more is coming to an Unraid server near you

Unraid 8 is moving from a custom Slackware base to Fedora, built on Universal Blue's uCore, for faster security updates and broader hardware support, plus built-in backups, native Docker Compose, improved plugin permissions, and much more.

The Unraid 7.4.0 beta is live now

Unraid 7.4.0-beta.1 is live, and it's a big one for anyone juggling background jobs. A new shared task tray lets you track tasks from any browser tab, so you're no longer stuck watching one page for progress. Containers can now attach to multiple Docker networks at once, giving you more flexibility for complex setups, and a configurable power button lets you decide exactly what a press should do.

A new video series is out: Home Assistant on Unraid

We're kicking off a series on running Home Assistant on Unraid, and part 1 is out now all about setting it up with no new hardware and setting up your first Find My Phone automation.

New Unraiders on the Team

Back in June's digest, we shared two open roles and asked the community to help us spread the word. You did, and it worked! Both positions are filled, so help give a warm welcome to the two newest members of the Unraid team.

Welcome Alex Kretzschmar!

Head of Product Marketing

Alex’s Unraid journey started more than a decade ago, when he became an active Unraid community contributor experimenting with virtualization, GPU passthrough, Docker, and more. He later co-founded LinuxServer.io, helping make self-hosting and complex technology easier to understand.

Now, Alex is bringing his experience across open source, developer education, networking, enterprise, and technical media back to Unraid. His focus: making Unraid the best-in-class for power users while making self-hosting simpler and more approachable to all.

Welcome Scott Schwartz!

Head of Operations and Automation

Scott joins Unraid with more than 20 years of experience turning complex, manual workflows into scalable systems and processes. He’s worked across operations, engineering, and data, often helping early-stage and high-growth companies build the structure needed to scale.

At Unraid, Scott will focus on improving internal operations through better processes, automation, tracking, and visibility while helping the team move faster and scale effectively without losing what makes Unraid unique. He also brings plenty of dad jokes along for the ride.

App of the Month

Calling all Birders! BirdNET-Go turns your Unraid server into a 24/7 offline bird-listening station. It identifies species from live audio using a model trained on more than 6,500 species, running entirely locally with no cloud required. Whether you're using a simple USB microphone, a weatherproof outdoor mic, or an existing RTSP network camera as your audio source, every detection is logged with spectrograms, confidence scores, and audio clips, building a running history of what's visiting (or flying over) your home. Nocturnal migrants and even bats work too. It connects to Home Assistant over MQTT for alerts and automations, and you can optionally use an Intel iGPU with OpenVINO for faster, more efficient AI inference. This month's video walks through the full build: microphone setup, sound driver installation, RTSP audio sources, and much more.

Merch of the Month

The Unraid and Chill Tee brings a retro-night illustration to heavyweight, pre-shrunk combed cotton, sizes XS to 5XL.

Every tee in the merch store is on sale now, mix and match, for a limited time. All $20!
